  • Description

Graham 1997 Single Harvest Tawny Port: This wine represents the beginning of a journey, from apprentice to cellar master. It celebrates deep knowledge of the vineyard and the mastery of tasting, essential requirements for crafting the exceptional wood-aged Ports of Graham’s.

At the harvest of 1997, Graham’s current Director of Winemaking, Charles Symington, was an apprentice to his father, Peter. Although extraordinary wines were produced that year, bottled as Vintage Port, Peter selected some of the best for extended wood aging. More than 25 years later, Charles selected the remaining casks for a limited edition.

The vegetative period of 1997 was unusual. An incredibly cold winter brought snow to the Douro Valley, followed by unseasonably warm and dry weather in February and March. The high temperatures preceding the harvest allowed for an excellent final ripening period, resulting in a year of low yields but incredible concentration and balance.

Graham’s 1997 Single Harvest is a fabulous accompaniment to creamy or nutty desserts, such as crème brûlée or almond tart. It is also delightful when enjoyed on its own after a meal. Serving the wine chilled is recommended. After opening, enjoy for 6 to 8 weeks.

    Tasting Notes:
Deep brown-orange center. With an intense copper-toned halo. Aromas of quince jam with hints of vanilla and subtle caramel, as well as notes of honey and raisins. The aging in wood is reflected in delicate almond and marzipan notes. In the background, a slightly noticeable appealing smoky element.
Intense red fruit flavors, complemented by cask aging but full of freshness and vitality, combined with an underlying citrus acidity, give the wine balance and elegance.
A long and pleasant finish, with a subtle combination of nuts, tea, and tobacco.

Colheita Port Storage and Serving Advice:
Colheita Port should be stored in a cool and dry place, sheltered from light and temperature fluctuations, and the bottle should remain in an upright position. If stored correctly, Colheita Ports will keep for decades in the bottle. Over time, it is natural that a little sediment will form at the bottom of a bottle of colheita Port wine. Once opened colheita Port should be stored in a fridge and should be consumed within 3 months. Colheita Ports do not require decanting and are best served at a temperature between 14 and 16°C.
