Description

Vintage & Background

Produced from a blend of traditional Madeira grape varieties, predominantly Tinta Negra harvested in 1997, this mature fortified wine reflects the richness, balance, and remarkable ageing capacity for which Madeira is celebrated. Extended cask ageing has allowed the wine to develop deep oxidative complexity while retaining the vibrant acidity that gives Madeira its unmistakable freshness and longevity.

Appearance & Nose

The colour is a deep amber with a bright yellow-gold rim, showing excellent maturity and clarity. The nose is intense and complex, offering aromas of prune, dried fig, toasted walnut, and roasted coffee, layered with notes of caramelised sugar, black tea, polished wood, and candied citrus peel. Compared with richer styles such as Marsala, the profile is finer and more lifted, with less overt volatility and greater aromatic precision.

Palate & Texture

On the palate, the wine is smooth, rich, and beautifully integrated. Flavours of caramel, molasses, dried fruits, black tea, espresso, and toasted nuts unfold gradually across the palate, supported by a vibrant thread of acidity that keeps the wine energetic and focused. The texture is silky and mouth-coating without heaviness, leading to a long, warming finish with lingering notes of coffee, spice, and citrus peel.

Maturity & Drinking Window

Now fully mature, this 1997 Tinta Negra is drinking beautifully and shows a harmonious balance between sweetness, oxidative development, and freshness. Thanks to Madeira’s extraordinary stability, the wine will remain highly enjoyable for many years after bottling and can continue evolving gracefully in bottle.

Food Pairing & Serving Suggestions

Serve slightly cool at around 14–16 °C. Excellent with sticky toffee pudding, walnut tart, crème brûlée, blue cheeses, or dark chocolate desserts. It also makes an outstanding contemplative after-dinner wine and pairs especially well with roasted nuts and dried fruits.

Decanting

Stand the bottle upright before opening to allow any sediment to settle. Older Madeira corks may become delicate with age, so remove carefully and strain during decanting if required. Madeira benefits from aeration and can remain open for an extended period after opening without significant deterioration. Serve at 14–16 °C.

Overall Impression & Verdict

This mature 1997 Tinta Negra is a beautifully balanced and expressive Madeira, combining rich caramelised depth with lifted acidity and refined oxidative complexity. Layered with dried fruit, coffee, spice, and toasted nut character, it offers a deeply satisfying and classically styled fortified wine experience.
