Description
The *1908 Martinez Vintage Port* is a remarkable and rare survivor from one of the great early 20th-century vintages, offering more than 115 years of history in the glass. Produced by the renowned Martinez Port house and shipped by Whitwhams Wines Ltd, this wine was crafted in the traditional manner—foot-trodden in granite lagares and bottled after two years in cask—before beginning its century-long journey of graceful maturation. Bottles from this era, especially in good condition, are exceedingly scarce and highly prized by serious collectors.
In the glass, it would be expected to display a deep mahogany-tawny core, shading to a green-olive rim—an unmistakable sign of great age in fine Port. The bouquet is captivating, with layers of dried fig, medjool date, and sultana merging with caramelised walnut, treacle, and cocoa. Delicate undertones of cedarwood, antique leather, and sweet spice provide further complexity, each swirl of the glass revealing new aromatic dimensions.
On the palate, the *1908 Martinez* is mellow yet concentrated, its sweetness perfectly integrated after decades of bottle ageing. Flavours of toffee, candied citrus peel, roasted nuts, and dark chocolate are lifted by a subtle freshness, while a gentle nuttiness and warm spice linger long into the finish. The mouthfeel is silky and harmonious, with every sip telling the story of its remarkable longevity.
The *1908 Martinez Vintage Port* is not just a drink—it is a preserved fragment of the Douro’s winemaking heritage. Ideal for marking the most significant of celebrations or as the centrepiece of a fine wine collection, it offers an unrepeatable opportunity to savour the elegance, depth, and history of one of Portugal’s legendary vintages.
