  • Description

Massandra Alupka White Port 1940 is an extraordinary historic fortified wine from the legendary Massandra Collection, renowned for producing some of the world’s most age-defying and characterful sweet and fortified wines. Stored for more than eight decades in the cool, stable conditions of the Massandra cellars, this 1940 release represents a rare opportunity to enjoy a piece of vinous history in exceptional condition.

The nose is remarkably expressive for a wine of this age, offering a complex tapestry of dried apricot, orange zest, honeycomb and toasted nuts. Subtle notes of antique wood, beeswax and caramelised citrus emerge with time in the glass, showcasing the signature oxidative richness that Massandra whites develop over long-term ageing.

On the palate, the wine is luscious and deeply layered, with flavours of candied fruits, baked apple, almond cream and warm spice. The texture is velvety yet refined, balanced by a thread of acidity that has allowed the wine to age with immense grace. The finish is long, warming and intricately detailed — a testament to Massandra’s unique winemaking methods and pristine cellaring.

A truly collectible bottle, offering both historical significance and remarkable drinking pleasure. Perfect for enthusiasts of rare fortified wines, tasting events or as a centrepiece for any serious collection.

The wineries in Massandra were built during the reign of Czar Nicholas II. During the process, wine caves were constructed beneath the city. This “personal wine cellar” of the Czar contained tens of thousands of bottles. These caves survived the Russian Revolution, both World Wars, the fall of Communism, and Yakov Smirnoff. In 1990, about 13,000 of these bottles – never before available in the West – were put to auction
