Description

The Merlot 1960 Cantina S. Margherita is an exceptionally rare and historic Italian red wine from the Veneto region. Produced by Santa Margherita, this vintage reflects early Italian Merlot production and demonstrates the winery’s traditional winemaking methods, emphasizing structure, balance, and long ageing potential.

Tasting Notes:

The 1960 vintage is fully mature and tertiary. On the nose, it presents aromas of dried plum, black cherry, leather, tobacco, forest floor, and subtle earthy and herbal notes. With gentle aeration, hints of cedarwood, spice, and dried fruits emerge.

On the palate, it is elegant, smooth, and harmonious, with integrated tannins and balanced acidity. The fruit has evolved into dried and savory tones, supported by tertiary complexity including leather, spice, and subtle minerality. The finish is long, refined, and contemplative, reflecting classic aged Italian Merlot.

Serving & Food Pairing:

Best served at 16–18°C. Handle with care due to age; pour gently and decant only if necessary to separate sediment.

Pairs well with:

Braised beef or lamb
Roasted game
Mushroom-based dishes
Aged hard cheeses
Traditional northern Italian cuisine

Producer:

Santa Margherita is a historic winery founded in 1935, known for pioneering both native and international varietals in the Veneto region. Early Merlot bottlings like this 1960 vintage showcase the estate’s dedication to traditional techniques, careful selection, and long-term ageing, making them highly collectible today.
