The Merlot 1961 Cantina S. Margherita is a rare and historic Italian red wine that reflects an early expression of Merlot produced in northern Italy during the post-war era of traditional winemaking. After more than sixty years of bottle ageing, this wine offers a fully evolved and mature profile, representing a fascinating piece of Italian wine history.

Tasting Notes:

The 1961 vintage is deeply tertiary and elegant in character. The bouquet opens with aromas of dried plum, black cherry preserve, leather, tobacco, cedarwood, forest floor, dried herbs, and subtle balsamic nuances. With gentle aeration, delicate notes of sweet spice, old wood, and earthy complexity continue to emerge.

On the palate it is soft, silky, and harmonious, with mellow tannins and integrated acidity supporting the wine’s mature savory profile. The fruit has evolved into delicate dried berry and plum notes, leaving space for layers of earthy, leathery, and spicy complexity. The finish is long, subtle, and refined, typical of mature Merlot wines from this period.

Serving & Food Pairing:

Best served at 18°C. Due to its age, the bottle should be handled carefully and gently decanted only if necessary to separate sediment. It pairs beautifully with:
