Description
The Merlot DOC 1983 Santarelli is a historic red wine from Italy. Produced by Santarelli, it is made from 100% Merlot grapes and reflects the typical Italian interpretation of Merlot in the early 1980s: a soft, approachable style intended for food pairing, with moderate structure and the potential for graceful bottle evolution if well stored.
Tasting notes:
The 1983 vintage is now fully mature and showing developed tertiary character. The nose opens with aromas of dried black cherry, plum skin, leather, tobacco leaf, dried herbs, and forest floor. With aeration, subtle notes of earth, spice, and faint balsamic nuances may appear.
On the palate it is soft, evolved, and rounded, with Merlot’s naturally gentle tannins now fully resolved. The acidity provides balance, while the fruit has shifted into savory dried-fruit and earthy tones, with light hints of cocoa and dried herbs. The finish is medium-short to medium in length, smooth, and gently fading.
Serving & food pairing:
Best served at 16–18°C, with gentle handling and minimal or no decanting.
It pairs well with:
Roasted meats
Pork dishes
Mushroom-based recipes
Pasta with meat sauce
Semi-aged cheeses
Producer:
Santarelli is an Italian wine producer associated with traditional commercial DOC wines, reflecting the broader style of regional Merlot production in the 1980s, focused on accessibility, balance, and food-friendly character rather than modern concentrated styles.
