2003 Niepoort – Vintage Port (Douro, Portugal)

A benchmark ’03 from Dirk Niepoort—ripe year power wrapped in the house’s trademark finesse. Deep opaque garnet/purple with only the faintest rim fade. The nose is vivid and complex: blackberry and black cherry conserve, cassis and violet, with dark chocolate, liquorice, crushed rock, fennel seed and a cool menthol/eucalyptus lift.

On the palate it’s concentrated yet beautifully poised. Sweet black fruits and kirsch ride on bright, well-knit acidity; tannins are abundant, fine and chalky—present but polished. Layers of cocoa nib, espresso, black pepper and mineral drive carry through to a long, mouthcoating finish with lingering blackberry, cacao and orange-zest bitters.

Serve: 14–16 °C. Decant 2–3 hours to shed crust and unlock aromatics.
Food pairing: Stilton/blue cheeses, walnut tart, high-cacao chocolate desserts, roasted nuts; superb solo after dinner.
Drink window: Excellent now with proper air; entering a great plateau 2025–2040+, with long life in top cellars.
