Description
1980 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano – Cantina di Montepulciano, Riserva (Tuscany, Italy)
A fully mature, classically styled Riserva that favours perfume and savoury finesse over power. Brick-garnet with a broad tawny rim, it opens on dried cherry and amarena, rose petal and cedar, with sweet tobacco, leather and hints of orange peel and black tea. The palate is mid-weight and silken: lively, old-school acidity carries savoury red-cherry fruit, dried herbs and a gentle balsamic note; tannins are fine and resolved. The finish is long and tapering with cherry skin, cedar spice and dried flowers.
Producer note: Cantina di Montepulciano (Vecchia Cantina) is the region’s historic growers’ cooperative, championing Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese) from the Montepulciano hills. Riserva bottlings see longer élevage in large old casks and bottle, delivering lift, poise and graceful tertiary complexity—as shown here.
Serve: 16–18 °C. Stand upright 12–24 hours; very gentle decant for sediment just before pouring.
Food pairing: Roast pork with fennel, pappardelle al ragù, porcini risotto, aged pecorino.
