Description
The 1943 Quinta da Eira Velha Vintage Port is a rare and extraordinary bottle from one of the Douro Valley’s most respected estates, produced in the midst of the Second World War. Despite the global turmoil of the time, the Douro enjoyed a year of exceptional conditions, yielding grapes of remarkable concentration and balance. Quinta da Eira Velha, long renowned for supplying top-quality fruit to some of the finest Port houses, crafted a wine in 1943 that has stood the test of time, now offering a rich, mature expression of true vintage character.
In the glass, it presents a deep amber-brown core fading to golden-olive edges, a beautiful hallmark of long-aged Vintage Port. The nose is captivating and multi-layered, with aromas of dried figs, dates, and sultanas interwoven with molasses, dark chocolate, and roasted walnut. Subtle notes of orange peel, exotic spice, coffee bean, and a whisper of floral perfume give the bouquet both depth and lift.
On the palate, this Port is silky, concentrated, and impeccably balanced. The sweetness of dried fruit and caramel is perfectly offset by a lively acidity that has preserved its freshness for over eight decades. Flavours of prune, treacle, and toffee are joined by savoury undertones of leather, tobacco, and toasted almond. The tannins, once powerful, have melted into a velvety texture, leading to an exceptionally long finish that lingers with spice, nut, and sweet fruit notes.
This is a bottle to savour on the most special of occasions. Serve very slightly chilled, in generous Port glasses, and allow it to open gently in the glass rather than with extended decanting, to protect its delicate aromatics. It is superb alongside blue cheese, roasted nuts, or rich dark chocolate desserts, though it is perhaps best appreciated on its own, in quiet reflection. The 1943 Quinta da Eira Velha Vintage Port is more than a wine—it is a living piece of history, an enduring testament to the artistry and resilience of the Douro’s winemakers.
