Quinta do Noval, 1970
Vintage Port
Summary
Quinta do Noval 1970 Vintage Port comes from one of the most celebrated declared vintages of the twentieth century. The 1970 harvest produced many legendary Ports, and Noval’s example is particularly admired for its elegance, balance and longevity. After more than five decades of bottle ageing, the wine has evolved into a beautifully complex and harmonious Vintage Port.
Tasting Notes
Now displaying a deep garnet colour fading gently to a tawny rim, the bouquet is wonderfully expressive and mature. Aromas of dried cherries, figs and raisins mingle with notes of walnut, cedarwood, tobacco and sweet spice. Subtle hints of chocolate and orange peel add further depth.
On the palate the wine is smooth and refined, showing layers of mature red fruits, dried plum and toasted nuts. The tannins have softened over time, giving the wine a silky texture, while a thread of freshness keeps it balanced and lively. The finish is long, elegant and persistent, with lingering notes of dried fruit, spice and gentle cocoa.
Vintage Overview
The 1970 vintage is widely regarded as one of the finest of the post-war period in the Douro Valley. A hot summer followed by excellent harvest conditions produced grapes of outstanding ripeness and concentration. The wines have shown exceptional longevity, and many—including those from Quinta do Noval—are considered benchmarks for mature Vintage Port.
Serving Suggestions
Serve at 16–18°C and decant carefully to remove the natural sediment formed during long bottle ageing. It pairs beautifully with blue cheeses such as Stilton, dark chocolate desserts, or can be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine.
Cellaring
Fully mature and drinking beautifully now. Once opened, it should ideally be enjoyed within 1–2 days.
