Description
A Vintage of Elegance from the Douro
The 1997 Quinta do Noval Silval exemplifies the noble tradition of Douro winemaking in a year known for elegance over power. Now over 25 years old, this wine strikes a rare balance: poised maturity tempered by youthful vitality. Its deep ruby hue, fading to garnet at the rim, mirrors the graceful development of a well-aged Douro masterpiece.
Complex and Captivating Aroma
On the nose, expect a layered bouquet of black cherry, plum, and wild berry compote, woven together with subtle hints of floral violets and tertiary notes of cedar and dried herbs. As the wine opens, touches of tobacco, leather, and soft baking spices emerge, offering a tapestry of aromas that captivates the senses.
Rich, Balanced Palate
The palate is velvety and richly textured, delivering a harmonious blend of ripe dark fruits, mocha, and dark chocolate, softened by smooth, well-integrated tannins. A refined acidity keeps the wine fresh, ensuring each sip feels lively and balanced. The long, elegant finish leaves lingering impressions of dark fruit and delicate spice.
Serving and Pairing Suggestions
To fully enjoy its character, decant the 1997 Silval for approximately one hour before serving at 16–18 °C. It pairs beautifully with dishes like roasted lamb, mushroom risotto, and aged hard cheeses. It’s equally captivating on its own—an ideal choice for slow contemplation or special moments.
A Collector’s Classic
Holding a bottle of this vintage Silval is owning a piece of Douro heritage. Its graceful maturity, backing of a respected estate, and scarcity make it a standout in any collection. Ideal for both seasoned collectors and curious wine lovers alike, it offers a refined and timeless expression of what aged Douro wines can achieve.

Reviews
Robert Parker: 93/100 "A small quinta owned by Quinta do Noval, the 1997 Silval is a splendid effort as well as a sleeper of the vintage. This full-bodied, saturated purple-colored wine displays abundant quantities of chocolate, licorice, and coffee bean notes intertwined with black berry and cassis fruit. Massive in the mouth, with sweet tannin and stunning concentration, this knock-out 1997 should drink well in 3-4 years, and last for two decades or more. Very impressive!"
James Suckling: [Wine Spectator] 91/100 "Impressive berry, violet and grape skin aromas. Full-bodied, with a solid core of silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Well done. Even better than when tasted from barrel. Best after 2006."
