Quinta do Vesúvio Capela 2024 Vintage Port
A Monumental and Rare Expression of Quinta do Vesúvio
Quinta do Vesúvio has announced the release of the 2024 Capela Vintage Port, one of the estate’s rarest and most profound wines. Produced only in tiny quantities and exclusively in exceptional years, Capela represents the pinnacle of Quinta do Vesúvio’s vineyard selection, combining immense concentration, structure, and refinement with the wild and distinctive character that defines the estate. The 2024 vintage marks only the sixth release of Capela in almost two decades.
Deep opaque purple-black in colour, the nose is intensely complex and deeply expressive, resonating with aromas of Douro schist, herbal garrigue, wild lavender, pine resin, forest floor, and dark chocolate. Layers of black cherry, cassis, and concentrated woodland fruit emerge beneath the wine’s savoury and mineral complexity, while subtle floral and spice notes add lift and elegance.
On the palate, the wine is bold, expansive, and immensely structured, revealing exceptional depth and power balanced by remarkable freshness and precision. Sculpted tannins frame dense layers of black fruit, liquorice, cocoa, and spice, while vibrant acidity brings energy and definition to the wine’s monumental structure. Despite its intensity, the 2024 Capela retains extraordinary balance and harmony, leading to a long, persistent, and deeply complex finish that lingers impressively on the palate.
The 2024 growing season provided moderate conditions and gradual ripening, allowing the estate’s finest vineyard plots to express their individual personalities with exceptional clarity. Traditional foot treading in granite lagares, extended fermentations, and carefully managed co-fermentations enhanced the wine’s structure, complexity, and aromatic precision. The final blend draws from several exceptional vineyard sites across Quinta do Vesúvio, including the historic Vinha da Capela, Vinha da Escola, Vale da Teja, and Vinha dos Castelos.
