1982 Ramos Pinto – Vintage Port (Douro, Portugal)

A beautifully mellow, fully mature Vintage Port from one of the Douro’s classic houses. In the glass it shows deep garnet fading to tawny at the rim. The nose is complex and inviting: dried fig and date, black cherry liqueur and plum compote, orange peel, cocoa, coffee bean and warm spice, with a subtle eucalyptus/menthol lift and polished old-oak tones.

Silky and harmonious on the palate. Sweet blackberry and kirsch fold into caramelised nut, dark chocolate and baking spice; the spirit is well knit, acidity fresh, and the tannins now velvety and resolved. The finish is long and graceful with lingering notes of walnut, cacao and candied citrus.

Producer note: Founded in 1880 by Adriano Ramos Pinto, the house is famed for aromatically expressive, silky Ports sourced from prime estates such as Quinta do Bom Retiro and Quinta de Ervamoira—a style that ages into poise and perfume.

Serve: Lightly cool 14–16 °C. Decant 1–2 hours to remove crust and open the aromatics.
Food pairing: Stilton or mature blue cheeses, walnut tart, dark chocolate desserts, roasted nuts.
Drink window: Perfect now; will hold a graceful plateau for several more years if well cellared.

Opaque garnet with a touch of brick. Floral and heady, with a sweet, Christmas-cake and figgy-pudding nose that’s developing rather nicely. Fat and sweet, with resolved tannins, good length and a chocolate finish. Not a renowned vintage, but an accomplished wine. (TJ)- Jancis Robinson.com
