Rioja Palacio Glorioso Cosecha Gran Reserva 1964

The 1964 Rioja Palacio Glorioso Cosecha Gran Reserva is a remarkable survivor from one of Rioja’s truly great classic vintages. Now fully mature, it offers a beautiful expression of traditional Rioja elegance, complexity and gentle, savoury depth. The colour has faded to a pale garnet with pronounced brick-orange tones at the rim, reflecting its long and graceful evolution.

The nose is delicate yet wonderfully layered, with aromas of dried cherry, redcurrant and plum skin intertwined with leather, tobacco, old wood, vanilla and gentle coconut from extended ageing in American oak. Hints of forest floor, dried herbs, orange peel and subtle spice add further nuance and authenticity.

On the palate, the wine is light to medium-bodied, silky and harmonious. The tannins are completely resolved, giving a soft, refined texture, while flavours of dried red fruits, tea leaf, savoury spice and gentle oak sweetness unfold with clarity. Fresh acidity provides lift and keeps the wine balanced and alive despite its age.

The finish is elegant, calm and quietly persistent, leaving lingering impressions of dried fruit, leather, vanilla and soft spice. This is a wine for contemplation rather than power.

This mature Rioja pairs beautifully with roast lamb, pork, grilled chicken, mushroom dishes, classic Spanish stews and aged Manchego or other semi-hard cheeses.
