Description
Federico Paternina Viña Vial Reserva 1982 – Rioja
The 1982 Viña Vial Reserva from Federico Paternina is a beautifully mature and traditionally styled Rioja, offering elegance, complexity and gentle charm after more than four decades of ageing. The colour has softened to a clear garnet with pronounced brick-orange tones at the rim, reflecting its graceful evolution.
The nose is delicate, refined and wonderfully expressive. Aromas of dried cherry, redcurrant and plum are layered with leather, tobacco, vanilla, coconut and gentle sweet spice from long American oak ageing. Subtle notes of forest floor, dried herbs and orange peel add further depth and classic Rioja character.
On the palate, the wine is smooth, light to medium-bodied and beautifully harmonious. The tannins are fully resolved, giving a silky, gentle texture, while flavours of dried red fruits, tea leaf, savoury spice and soft oak sweetness unfold with clarity. The acidity remains fresh, keeping the wine lively and elegant despite its age.
The finish is soft, refined and quietly persistent, leaving lingering impressions of dried fruit, vanilla, leather and gentle spice. This is a Rioja that rewards slow, thoughtful appreciation rather than seeking power.
This mature Viña Vial pairs beautifully with roast lamb, pork, grilled chicken, charcuterie, mushroom dishes and classic Spanish cuisine, as well as aged Manchego and other semi-hard cheeses.
A graceful, fully mature Rioja offering balance, subtle complexity and timeless charm. The 1982 Federico Paternina Viña Vial Reserva is a lovely example of traditional Rioja ageing with dignity, elegance and excellent drinkability today.
