1966 Rivesaltes St Michel – Rivesaltes VDN

Produced in the warm Mediterranean vineyards of Roussillon, the 1966 Rivesaltes St Michel is a traditional Vin Doux Naturel, fortified to preserve natural sweetness and then matured for decades in cask and bottle. St Michel is a classic regional producer, following long-established methods of fortification and oxidative ageing that allow the wine to develop remarkable complexity over time.

    Tasting Notes:
Deep amber-mahogany in colour with copper and olive highlights at the rim, the nose is richly evolved and expressive. Aromas of dried apricot, orange peel and fig mingle with notes of walnut, caramel and toasted almond, alongside subtle hints of spice and polished wood. On the palate it is smooth and layered, offering flavours of candied citrus, date, honeyed nuts and toffee. A balancing thread of acidity keeps the sweetness in check, leading to a long, warming and gently oxidative finish with lingering notes of spice and dried fruit.

    Serving & Food Pairing:
Best served lightly chilled to emphasise freshness and aromatic lift. A natural partner to crème brûlée, almond tart, blue cheeses or pâté, though equally rewarding enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner glass.

    Summary:
A beautifully mature Rivesaltes VDN, shaped by decades of patient ageing. The 1966 St Michel offers depth, balance and classic oxidative complexity, making it a rewarding bottle for lovers of long-aged fortified wines.
