Description
1945 Vecchio Salento Rosso, Ruffino
Puglia, Italy
The 1945 Vecchio Salento Rosso from Ruffino is an extraordinary relic of Italian winemaking history, produced in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. At this time, Ruffino—already a house of great repute in Tuscany—sourced select southern cuvées from trusted growers in Salento, blending traditional craftsmanship with regional character.
In the glass, the wine presents a deep tawny-brick hue, translucent at the rim and shimmering with amber. The nose is profoundly mature and hauntingly beautiful, with aromas of dried fig, antique wood, leather, and balsamic spice, intertwined with faint notes of cocoa, prune, and warm earth.
On the palate, it is silky and gently fading, yet remarkably composed. Layers of dried plum, date, roasted nut, and sweet tobacco unfold slowly, framed by soft acidity and the lingering warmth of time. Though delicate now, its balance and poise remain a testament to the resilience of both wine and maker.
Serving & Pairing:
Best enjoyed contemplatively at 18 °C, without extended decanting. A superb contemplative wine to savour on its own, or with aged cheeses, roasted nuts, or dark chocolate, allowing its quiet complexity to emerge unhurriedly.
Drink now. A rare and moving survivor from 1945—an authentic piece of Italian winemaking heritage that captures the endurance, craftsmanship, and quiet nobility of Ruffino’s early post-war era.
