Description

1958 Quinta de Vargellas LBV Port

Overview:
An exceptionally rare and historically intriguing Port, the 1958 Quinta de Vargellas LBV represents an early expression of the Late Bottled Vintage style long before the category became widely established. Produced from one of the Douro Valley’s most revered quintas, this mature bottling offers a fascinating glimpse into traditional mid-century Port production, where extended ageing and patient development created wines of remarkable tertiary complexity and elegance.

Appearance:
Deep tawny-garnet with amber-brick evolution at the rim, showing graceful maturity developed over many decades in bottle.

Nose:
Highly evolved and intensely aromatic, revealing layers of dried fig, black cherry and raisin intertwined with walnut, tobacco leaf and polished wood. With aeration, further nuances of orange peel, molasses, leather, spice and antique furniture emerge, adding exceptional depth and old-world character.

Palate:
Silky, mellow and beautifully resolved, with flavours of dried black fruits, fig preserve and caramelised nuts supported by notes of cocoa, spice and subtle oxidative complexity. The once-powerful structure has softened into a refined and harmonious texture, while the wine retains enough freshness to balance its richness and maturity.

Finish:
Long, warming and contemplative, lingering through dried fruits, walnut, spice and gentle caramelised nuance.

Decanting:
Stand upright for several days before opening to allow heavy sediment to settle. Decant slowly through a fine strainer and allow gentle aeration before serving at 16–18°C. Fragile corks are common with Ports of this age; strain any cork fragments carefully during decanting.

About the Estate:
Quinta de Vargellas is one of the Douro Valley’s most historic and respected estates, long associated with the production of traditionally styled Ports of structure, longevity and exceptional aromatic complexity. Rare bottlings such as this 1958 LBV offer a compelling snapshot of the evolution of Port styles during the mid-20th century and are seldom encountered today.
