  • Description

The *Antica Formula* from G. Carpano is widely regarded as the original Italian sweet vermouth, first crafted in 1786 by Antonio Benedetto Carpano in Turin. Made to a closely guarded recipe, this luxurious *rosso* vermouth is based on high-quality Italian wines and infused with a meticulous blend of herbs, roots, spices, and botanicals—most notably wormwood (*assenzio*), vanilla, saffron, and citrus peels. The result is a rich, full-bodied, and aromatic vermouth that has set the benchmark for the category for more than two centuries.

In the glass, *Antica Formula* displays a deep amber-brown colour with warm ruby glints, reflecting both its richness and artisanal character. The bouquet is intense and inviting, with pronounced notes of Madagascan vanilla, dried orange peel, and warm baking spices, supported by layers of cocoa, raisin, and subtle herbal bitterness. Hints of saffron, myrrh, and alpine herbs add depth and intrigue.

On the palate, it is velvety, well-rounded, and perfectly balanced between sweetness, spice, and herbal complexity. Flavours of vanilla pod, caramelised citrus, and dried fig mingle with bitter-sweet herbal tones, leading to a long, lingering finish with gentle spice and a refined, mouth-coating texture. Its richness makes it equally satisfying sipped neat or used as the star component in premium cocktails.

*Antica Formula* is best enjoyed over ice with a twist of orange, or as a luxurious base for classic cocktails such as the Negroni, Manhattan, or Americano. It also pairs beautifully with dark chocolate, aged cheeses, or nut-based desserts. More than just a vermouth, *Antica Formula* is a piece of Italian drinking heritage—an opulent, timeless expression of the art of aromatised wine.
