Description

This 1979 Volnay displays a pale garnet core fading to a brick-orange rim, with notable translucence and fine sediment consistent with a fully mature Côte de Beaune Pinot Noir. The colour suggests gentle extraction and long evolution, with the wine now firmly in its tertiary phase.

The nose is delicate and perfumed, offering dried rose petals, faded red cherry and wild strawberry, layered with forest floor, sous-bois and dried leaves. Subtle notes of leather, cedar, and gentle spice emerge with air, alongside hints of mushroom and a faint savoury game nuance. The aromatic profile is refined, ethereal, and classically mature.

On the palate, the wine is light to medium-bodied, graceful and finely textured. Dried red fruits — cherry, cranberry and strawberry — mingle with earthy undertones, tobacco leaf and a touch of sweet spice. The tannins are fully resolved, silky and integrated, while the acidity remains fresh and gently linear, providing balance and lift rather than power.

The finish is elegant and tapering, lingering on dried flowers, forest floor and soft spice. Fully mature and potentially fragile, bottle variation is to be expected. Stand upright before opening, decant only to remove sediment with minimal aeration, and serve slightly cool to highlight its perfume and delicacy.
