Description
The 1937 Vouvray from Marc Brédif is an extraordinary and historic Loire Valley wine, crafted from 100% Chenin Blanc and now carrying the prestige of nearly nine decades of patient bottle ageing. Marc Brédif is one of the most respected names in Vouvray, renowned for producing wines of remarkable longevity and purity. The 1937 vintage in the Loire is considered one of the great pre-war years, with a perfect balance of ripeness and acidity—qualities that have allowed this wine to age with grace and complexity for generations.
In the glass, it presents a deep amber-gold hue with glints of copper, a visual testament to its great age. The nose is hauntingly complex, opening with aromas of dried apricot, quince paste, and honeycomb, layered with notes of beeswax, lanolin, and chamomile. Subtle oxidative tones of walnut, spice, and antique wood intermingle with a faint saline minerality, reflecting both the Chenin Blanc grape and the chalky tuffeau soils of Vouvray.
On the palate, the 1937 Marc Brédif is rich, silky, and deeply harmonious. Flavours of baked apple, marmalade, and acacia honey are lifted by a thread of remarkable acidity that still carries the wine with energy. Gentle oxidative notes of almond, candied citrus, and warm spice emerge mid-palate, leading into a long, elegant finish that lingers with honeyed fruit and mineral freshness. The balance between sweetness, acidity, and tertiary depth is a hallmark of great aged Vouvray.
This is a wine to be savoured with reverence, served lightly chilled in a white wine glass to allow its intricate aromatics to unfold. It pairs beautifully with foie gras, blue cheese, roasted hazelnuts, or fruit-based desserts, but it is perhaps best enjoyed entirely on its own as a rare meditation wine. The 1937 Vouvray from Marc Brédif is not just a bottle—it is a living piece of French wine history, offering the chance to taste the elegance and resilience of one of the Loire Valley’s greatest vintages.
