Description
‘The following Madeira’s were shipped directly from the island to be offered in this sale. All wines were selected by O.P. Brothers, two gentlemen with a keen eye for quality Madeira. This collection was sourced from private island collections’ The brothers referred to are Oleg and Pedro—renowned for discovering, authenticating, centuries-old vintage Madeira wines (often dating back to the early 1800s). Their work involves rescuing highly sought-after collections. These antique wines are heavily prized at premium auction houses and specialist merchants. The exact 1779 bottle still appears photographed online in the Christies archives.
The oldest known Welsh Bros. Madeira. The Welsh family coat of arms is stamped on the wax seal. Welsh Bros. established in 1794
and were the largest shipper of Madeira wine before the odium outbreak in 1852. They were important suppliers to the Russian and the Swedish courts. In 1893 John F. Welsh was appointed the Russian Consul. In the second part of the 19th century, Welsh Bros. focussed on shipping high quality bottled wines to the United States.
They were known to mature their wines in "estufas do sol" rather than artificially heated estufas. Welsh Bros. co-founded the Madeira Wine Company in 1913.
