Prats and Symington, 2016

Prazo de Roriz

This 2016 Prazo de Roriz red wine is from the famous joint venture of the Symington family with Bruno Prats of Bordeaux. Such a vivid purple colour, but immediately more refined, less fruitcakey and plummy than the Altano before it, more cedar and incense fragrance and lovely balance and finesse, lightness. Juicy and long, with elegant and fine tannins and fresher acidity.

The Prazo de Roriz is characterized in particular by red fruits, raspberries and cherries and the Roriz terroir provides a distinctive minerality and appealing peppery spice. Made for drinking young, but with the potential for developing in-bottle for several years.

Prats and Symington, 2016

Chryseia

This 2016 Chryseia, Portuguese red wine, is an extraordinary wine with a unique statement. The superb Chryseia brings premium Bordeaux technique to the character and richness of Portugal's distinctive local varieties. Like many 'challenging' vintages, 2016 favoured the top end - where the oldest vines in the best vineyards could be closely managed through the long dry summer. In fact the vast majority was harvested before the rain arrived - making a near perfect scenario. With a stellar track record, this always sells out. Decant or cellar - grab this before it goes!

This outstanding wine is the ultimate product of the Prats & Symington partnership, between the Symington family and French oenologist Bruno Prats.

Dao, 1990

Porta dos Cavaleiros

Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character,

1989 Cabernet Sauvignon

Quinta do Poço do Lobo

The 1989 Poco de Lobo Cabernet Sauvignon is a super cool old-school Cab. With a deep garnet colour, the wine shows impressive nose of cassis, licorice and sous bois, with dry herbs such as oregano and thyme and expressive varietal tertiary characteristics of leather, cigar box, dried mushrooms and forest floor. On the palate it is savory and full bodied with a beautiful balance between its fresh acidity and tertiary aromatics. This is still very fresh and mouth-watering on the palate with a medium plus finish.
