Overall, the 2022 vintage looks set to be good for both the Old and the New Worlds, despite some wacky weather conditions. Although more time is needed to make an accurate assessment, as the vintage is still so fresh, there are likely to be some fantastic wines to emerge.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Quevedo 2022 Port Bond
  • Quevedo 2022 Claudias Reserve White Douro Wine
  • Quinta da Devesa 2022 Douro Rose Wine
  • Mount Horrocks 2022 Cordon Cut Clare Valley Riesling South Australia

Bordeaux: The 2022 Bordeaux vintage is widely regarded as very good to excellent, with critics comparing it to strong recent years like 2019, 2020 and 2016. Warm, dry conditions produced small, concentrated berries with deep colour and firm tannins, while cool nights helped preserve freshness and balance. The best wines show rich fruit, structure and ageing potential, though quality can vary between producers.

Douro Wines: In the Douro for table wines, 2022 was extremely warm and dry, with rainfall well below average and earlier harvesting. This gave intense red wines with ripe fruit, lower acidity and moderate alcohol, though yields were generally down. Where vineyards had cooler sites or good soil, wines maintained freshness and balance.

Italian: In Italy 2022, most key regions enjoyed good weather and quality. According to broader vintage overviews, Italian areas such as Piedmont and Tuscany delivered very good wines with balanced fruit and structure, while quality across the country was generally positive.

Portugal: The 2022 Port vintage came from one of the hottest, driest seasons on record, leading to small, concentrated grapes with advanced ripeness and structure. Although the year was challenging, many leading houses still declared 2022 Vintage Ports or excellent single‑quinta releases, showing deep flavour, firm tannins and good ageing potential.

    Vilafonte, 2022

    Seriously Old Dirt

The Seriously Old Dirt 2022 from Vilafonté is a sophisticated Bordeaux-style blend from South Africa’s Western Cape, dominated by 94% Cabernet Sauvignon with small portions of Malbec, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. It opens with expressive aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum, layered with dark chocolate, spice, and subtle oak. The palate is rich and textured, offering a velvety mouthfeel supported by firm, well-integrated tannins. Notes of ripe dark fruit are balanced by hints of cedar and tobacco, leading to a long, lingering finish. While immediately appealing for its depth and polish, this wine will continue to evolve beautifully, with optimal drinking expected between now and 2032.
