La Spinetta - Barolo Campè, Piedmont

The 2013 La Spinetta Barolo red wine is intense, vibrant ruby red. The nose is wild and exotic with dried flowers, earth, spice and berry character. Full-bodied, dense and decadent with ripe and round tannins and a long, flavorful finish and fabulous depth. Barolo Campe comes from 50+ year old vines grown in calcareous soils at 280m above sea level. Aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak barrique, then bottled unfined/unfiltered and aged an additional one year at the winery before release.

Giordano, Piedmont

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. It was not made after the previous harvest, in 2011. The recent editions have been nothing short of spectacular, earning 100-point scores in both 2007 and 2009 and 99 points in its latest appearance, 2010. It's a series that has set the bar extraordinarily high, and this 2012 Barolo Riserva Villero is a little less exciting in comparison. However, the wine holds its own as one of the most beautiful in the entire appellation and one of the best in the somewhat lackluster vintage. …
