Guimaraens Single Quinta Vintage Port

Fonseca has belonged in the first rank of Vintage Port producers since the nineteenth century. Its Vintage Ports are noted for their luscious fruitiness which develops great opulence and complexity with age.

This is a very rare example from the 1972 vintage. This wine has a tawny coloured rim around the outside. The nose is very gummy and thick with orange peel, slightly medicinal. Very reducted on the palate with thick tar, raisins, orange peel.

The extended barrel aging has given this wine a complex fusion of dried fruit and cedar notes. From the excellent 1970 vintage, the Calem has a dense, even, opaque crimson colour, with a very rich, dark well of black fruit and floral aromas, with all sorts of mineral and delicately spicy nuances. On the palate this has a beautifully focused sweetness, with a supple, svelte quality of black fruits, that is pure and very long and silky through the mid palate. There are fine chocolaty tannins adding plush depth, and the spirit is nicely integrated. This wine has lovely balance too, with excellent length, emphasising the harmony and structure of the wine.

A similar russet core, though a little clearer than the ’66. The nose has good definition and focus with an attractive bouquet of cooked meats, mulberry, spice and leather. Light and feminine, although it never really develops the nuance that I was hoping for in the glass. The palate is vigorous, note quite as elegant as the ’66, a little more alcoholic and unrefined, the finish more linear with liquorice, burnt toffee and raisin. Moderate length. Drinking now.
