Vintage Port

Quinta do Síbio, today part of Real Companhia Velha, is one of the historic estates of the Douro Valley. The property traces its origins back to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and has long been associated with traditional Douro viticulture on steep schist terraces.

The 1900 vintage is regarded as one of the classic declared years of the pre-First World War era. Many leading shippers declared the vintage, and surviving bottles are now exceptionally rare. Produced entirely by traditional methods — foot-trodden in granite lagares and matured in wood before bottling — these wines represent a style of Port from a period long before temperature control or modern winemaking techniques. …

This is a rare and limited release of the 1897 Madeira from the Araujo family cellars. The bottles are in perfect condition. There is something ethereal about tasting such a rare vintage. The 1897 Verdelho is very dry as one would expect from this style of Madeira. There is a huge amount happening on the complexity front with some bitter nut skin notes with dried flowers and citrus pith. Although quite dry, this does not come across as too severe. An electric wine that is astonishingly refreshing. Massive finish that goes on and on.

These bottles were part of a number found buried in the palace of Val-Flor when it was occupied by the state during the revolution of 1975. Tall flute shaped bottles, these are believed to have been bottled from cask in 1946. Decanted and re-waxed in 1979 to remove sediment. labels are marked with the initials VF of the Marquis of Val-Flor an aristocratic connoisseur, for whom the port was bottled.

Sercial Madeira

John Leacock sailed to Madeira from the United Kingdom (after the death of his father) in 1741 and at the age of 15 became the youngest apprentice at the firm of Madeira merchants, Catanach and Murdoch, staying until his contract expired on 11 March 1749. During his apprenticeship, he had been in constant contact with an old-school friend, John Patient, residing at that time in Charlestown, South Carolina who suggested that they themselves should commence trading. Leacock agreed and this marks the birth of the now world famous company.

An extremely rare 1887 Port wine made from grapes grown at Bom Retiro by the family owning the quinta prior to its sale to Ramos Pinto in 1919. The oldest vintage in the family reserves is 1860.

All original bottles were recorked in 2022 by Luis Sottamayor (cellar master of Ferreira). Each bottle has a branded cork with: 'Recorked 2022 Bom Retiro.

The 1885 was originally procured from the Afonso family and comes from Camo dos Lobos vineyards.
