Pauillac 5th Growth Classification
Half Bottle

The 1949 Château Batailley hails from a vintage celebrated for producing some of Bordeaux's most enduring and elegant wines. Located in the Pauillac appellation, Château Batailley is a fifth-growth estate renowned for its robust and age-worthy clarets. Chateau Haut Brion, 1949

Pessac-Leognan First Growth Classification
Level low shoulder - good but bin soiled label

Excluded from our guarantee

Château Haut-Brion’s vineyard is located in the commune of Pessac, just a few miles southwest of Bordeaux’s city center. It belongs to the Pessac-Léognan appellation, to the north of the Graves wine-growing region. Château Haut-Brion is the only wine to be both First Growth from the 1855 classification and Classified Growth of the Graves.
Approximately 2,000 years ago, the virtues of these tiny quartz pebbles known as “gravels” were discovered. The earliest written mention of a wine that was specifically identified as being produced from these soils can be traced back to 1521.
When he purchased Château Haut-Brion in 1935, Clarence Dillon restored it to its former glory and to the elite circle of the most legendary wines in the world.

Taylor Fladgate, 1948

Vintage Port
Level in Neck
100 points - Neil Martin Vinous

From the very good 1948 vintage, this very rare Taylors vintage port is one of the finest ports ever made

There is Vintage Port and then there is the 1948 Taylor Fladgate. It remains a monumental Port that towers over the 20th century. Nineteen forty-eight is perhaps one of the lesser-known declarations compared to 1945 and 1963, although nine houses declared that year. Michael Broadbent described that as an “error of judgment” given the quality of the vintage in retrospect. I have been fortunate to taste the 1948 Taylors on several occasions, encountering one or two perfect bottles along the way.

Taylor Fladgate, 1948

Vintage Port
English bottled by Hatch, Manfield and Co.
Provenance: Christies Sale Raby Castle

1948 Taylor's Vintage Port. A legendary Port still remarkably deep in color for its age, this vintage Port bursts with a striking nose, revealing an exotic combination of tropical fruit. The palate mirrors this exuberance, delivering a voluptuous richness with a gloriously smooth texture and luxurious mouthfeel. Mid-palate, the fruit’s opulence takes center stage, momentarily masking the underlying structural, spicy tannins that gradually emerge. The finish is nothing short of perfection, with layers of soft summer strawberries and fresh tropical vibrancy leaving an enduring impression of harmony and elegance.

Barolo, 1947

Giacomo Borgogno - Riserva

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Chateau Caillou, 1947

Sauternes 2eme Cru Classe

Tasting Notes from Cellar Tracker (2017) Good fill level, not decanted. Clear, salmon-amber color. Needs lots of air to open up and offers the wonderful perfume that only a truly great Sauternes can produce: Notes of honey, herbs, spices, all woven into one complex blend. The sweetness has perfectly blended in over the last half century and is balanced perfectly by the high acidity. Very mulit-layered and extremely complex. Toffee, coffee, honey, spices, figs and much more. Astonishingly everything is at its right place, all components of acidity, flavors and alcohol are perfectly integrated.

Chateau Coutet, 1947

Barsac, Premier Cru Classe

1947 Chateau Coutet tasting note from Cellar Tracker. "If the nose on the 1947 Coutet is promising, then the palate over-delivers with the most fresh rough cut Seville orange marmalade, macadamia, toffee, cooked shiitake, Marsala, and unsmoked cigar. This isn’t the biggest, but I love its combination of fresh and savory, of young and old, of lush and svelte." Tasted 2022 - 96 Points

Chateau Palmer, 1947

Margaux 3rd Growth Classification

95 Points cellar tracker review.
" It takes 15-20 minutes to open up this 69-year old beauty. Opulent and warm nose with light flower and prefume. The palate rested with clean and clear cherry, mints and sweet. Medium finishing given the age. It showed its best around 55-75 minutes after the bottle opened, and faded quickly after with alcoholic taste." Review on cellar tracker posted 2016.

An icon of the Margaux appellation, immediately recognisable by its midnight blue label and its inimitable velvet taste, Château Palmer has illustrated itself, over the course of its history, by a sound obsession: to carry its wines further on in their expression of the nuances of a great terroir.

Janneau, 1947

Armagnac 1947 Vintage

The 1947 Janneau Armanac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.
