Description

The Barbaresco 1970 Gaja “Infernot” is a very rare and historically significant wine from Gaja, produced during the early period of Angelo Gaja’s transformation of the estate. “Infernot” refers to a traditional cellar designation used in older bottlings and highlights the historic, cellar-aged character of this wine.

This bottle comes from an era when Gaja was still transitioning from strictly traditional Barbaresco production toward the more modern, vineyard-driven approach that would later make the estate world-famous.

Tasting Notes:

The 1970 vintage is fully mature and deeply tertiary. On the nose it shows dried rose petals, sour cherry, leather, tobacco, forest floor, dried herbs, and truffle-like earthy notes, along with balsamic and spice undertones developing with air.

On the palate it is elegant and fully evolved, with softened tannins and still-lively acidity providing structure. Compared to later Gaja vintages, this wine is more rustic and traditional in style, with a strong emphasis on earthy, savory complexity rather than fruit. The finish is long, subtle, and reflective, typical of old Nebbiolo from Barbaresco in this era.

Serving & Food Pairing:

Best served at 18°C. Handle with great care due to age; gentle pouring is recommended to separate sediment without over-decanting.

It pairs well with:

braised beef
roasted game
mushroom risotto
truffle-based dishes
aged hard cheeses

Producer:

Gaja is one of Italy’s most important and influential wine estates, founded in 1859. In the 1970s, Angelo Gaja began introducing radical changes in vineyard management and winemaking that would eventually redefine Barbaresco on the global stage. Wines like this “Infernot” bottling represent the bridge between traditional Barbaresco and the modern era of precision winemaking.
