Description
1980 Barbaresco – Contratto
The 1980 vintage in Piedmont produced classically structured wines, favouring balance and traditional ageing potential over sheer power. This Barbaresco from Contratto comes from one of the region’s historic names. Founded in 1867, Contratto is best known for its long heritage in Piedmontese winemaking and its traditional approach, favouring extended ageing and respect for Nebbiolo’s natural structure and perfume.
Tasting Notes:
Now showing a mature brick-garnet hue with amber highlights at the rim, the nose is expressive and gently evolved. Aromas of dried cherry, redcurrant and rose petal mingle with notes of leather, tobacco leaf and forest floor. With time in the glass, subtle nuances of truffle, cedarwood and warm spice emerge. On the palate it is medium-bodied and harmonious, with softened tannins and a lively thread of acidity that maintains freshness. Flavours of dried red fruits, savoury earth and delicate balsamic tones unfold gradually, leading to a long, elegant and contemplative finish.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Decant carefully to remove sediment and allow the wine to open slowly before serving. Best enjoyed at cellar temperature. A fine partner to braised meats, truffle dishes, mushroom risotto or mature hard cheeses.
Summary:
A mature and characterful Barbaresco from a historic Piedmont producer, the 1980 Contratto reflects a traditional era of Nebbiolo winemaking, offering savoury complexity, perfume and graceful evolution in bottle.
