  • Description

1980 Brunello di Montalcino – Caprili di A. Bartolomei (Tuscany, Italy)

A rare, fully mature Brunello showing the perfumed, savoury grace of long-aged Sangiovese Grosso. Brick-garnet with a broad tawny rim, the bouquet lifts with dried cherry and cranberry, rose petal and violet, cedar and sweet tobacco, plus hints of orange peel, black tea, porcini and a gentle balsamic/underbrush note. Mid-weight and silken on the palate: lively, old-school acidity carries red-cherry fruit, dried herbs and subtle leather; tannins are fine and resolved. The finish is long and tapering with cherry skin, cedar spice and dried flowers.

Producer note: Caprili (here labelled Caprili di A. Bartolomei) is a traditional, family-run estate in the south-west of Montalcino. Classic large-cask élevage and breezy hillside vineyards give Brunello of lift, poise and longevity—well expressed here at full tertiary maturity.

Serve: 16–18 °C. Stand upright 12–24 hours; very gentle decant for sediment just before pouring.
Food pairing: Roast lamb or pork with herbs, pappardelle al ragù, porcini risotto, aged pecorino.
