Description
1980 Brunello di Montalcino – Castiglion del Bosco (Tuscany, Italy)
A rare, fully mature Brunello showing the perfumed, savoury grace of long-aged Sangiovese Grosso. Brick-garnet with a broad tawny rim, the nose lifts with dried cherry and cranberry, rose petal and violet, cedar and sweet tobacco, plus hints of orange peel, black tea, porcini and a gentle balsamic/underbrush note. Mid-weight and silken on the palate: lively, old-school acidity carries red-cherry fruit, dried herbs and subtle leather; tannins are fine and resolved, the finish tapering with cherry skin, cedar spice and dried flowers.
Producer note: Castiglion del Bosco is one of Montalcino’s historic north-west estates, where altitude and galestro soils favour elegance and aromatic lift. Traditional large-cask ageing and long bottle rest yield Brunello of poise and longevity—well expressed here at full tertiary maturity.
Serve: 16–18 °C. Stand upright 12–24 hours; very gentle decant for sediment just before pouring.
Food pairing: Roast lamb or chicken with herbs, pappardelle al ragù, porcini risotto, aged pecorino.
