Description
1981 Brunello di Montalcino – Mastrojanni (Tuscany, Italy)
A fully mature, classical Brunello showing perfume and savoury finesse. Brick-garnet with a broad tawny rim, it opens on dried cherry and cranberry, rose petal and violet, with cedar, leather and sweet tobacco, plus hints of orange peel, black tea, porcini and a gentle balsamic/underbrush note. Mid-weight and silken on the palate: lively, old-school acidity carries red-cherry fruit, dried herbs and subtle leather; tannins are fine and resolved, the finish tapering with cherry skin, cedar spice and dried flowers.
Producer note: Mastrojanni (founded 1975 in Castelnuovo dell’Abate) is a benchmark southern Montalcino estate, where warmer exposures and traditional large-cask ageing yield Brunello of aromatic lift, poise and long life—well expressed here at full tertiary maturity.
Serve: 16–18 °C. Stand upright 12–24 hours; very gentle decant for sediment just before pouring.
Food pairing: Roast lamb or pork with herbs, pappardelle al ragù, porcini risotto, aged pecorino.
