Brunello di Montalcino 1981 – Argiano

The 1981 Brunello di Montalcino from Argiano is a classic, traditionally styled wine that now shows the full beauty of long ageing. The colour has softened to a translucent garnet with brick-orange highlights at the rim, reflecting its graceful maturity.

The nose is complex and elegant, offering aromas of dried cherry, redcurrant and plum, layered with leather, tobacco, forest floor and dried Mediterranean herbs. Subtle notes of balsamic, orange peel, cedar and gentle spice add further depth and refinement.

On the palate, the wine is smooth, poised and beautifully balanced. The tannins are fully resolved, giving a silky, refined texture, while flavours of dried red fruits, tea leaf, earthy spice and savoury notes unfold with clarity. Fresh acidity provides lift and keeps the wine lively and composed despite its age.

The finish is long, harmonious and quietly persistent, leaving lingering impressions of dried fruit, leather and gentle herbal spice. This is a Brunello that speaks clearly of tradition, patience and terroir.

This mature Brunello pairs superbly with slow-braised beef, lamb or wild boar, as well as classic Tuscan pasta dishes with rich ragù. It also complements mushroom and truffle dishes beautifully, along with aged Pecorino or Parmigiano Reggiano.
