Description
The Barbera d'Asti 1964 Bosca is a historic red wine from Piedmont, Italy. Produced by Bosca, it represents the traditional Barbera style of the 1960s: vibrant, rustic, food-driven, and centered on freshness and acidity rather than heavy extraction or oak influence. Made from Barbera grapes grown in the Asti area, this wine reflects a classic era of Piedmontese winemaking before the modernization of Italian wine production.
Tasting notes:
The 1964 vintage is now fully mature and extremely evolved. The nose opens with aromas of dried cherry, cooked plum, leather, tobacco, dried rose petals, forest floor, and earthy spice. With aeration, tertiary notes of balsamic, old wood, truffle, and faint oxidative nuances may appear.
On the palate it is delicate, soft, and fully resolved, with the naturally high acidity of Barbera still providing structure despite its advanced age. The fruit has evolved into savory dried-fruit and earthy characteristics, supported by notes of autumn leaves, spice, and subtle medicinal herbs. Tannins are minimal and completely integrated, while the finish is light to medium in length, mature, and gently fading.
Serving & food pairing:
Best served at 16–18°C, after allowing the bottle to rest upright for several hours before opening to reduce sediment disturbance. Decant only very carefully and briefly, if necessary.
It pairs well with:
Braised beef and veal
Mushroom risotto
Truffle dishes
Roasted poultry
Aged cheeses such as Castelmagno or Pecorino
Traditional Piedmontese cuisine
Producer:
Bosca is a historic Piedmontese wine house founded in the 19th century in Canelli, within the Asti area of Italy. The producer became internationally known for sparkling wines and classic regional bottlings, helping spread the reputation of Piedmontese wines abroad during the mid-20th century. Wines from this period often reflected a traditional and approachable style, emphasizing regional identity and compatibility with local cuisine.
