Description

This 1976 Barbera presents a deep garnet core with a brick-orange rim, showing the soft tawny tones and slight translucence typical of a wine at full maturity. Fine sediment is present, signalling careful ageing, and the colour suggests the wine has moved completely into its tertiary phase while retaining traces of its original vibrancy.

The nose is elegantly evolved, offering dried red cherry, cranberry compote, and subtle plum aromas, intertwined with tertiary nuances of leather, tobacco leaf, earthy forest floor, and gentle spice. Hints of dried herbs and balsamic lift provide additional complexity, while the overall bouquet is refined and delicate rather than powerful.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and smooth, with soft, integrated tannins and bright, linear acidity that provide balance and structure. Flavours of dried red fruit predominate — cherry, cranberry, and plum — layered with savoury notes of cedar, tobacco, and forest floor. The texture is silky yet slightly chalky, reflecting its age and graceful evolution.

The finish is gentle, lingering on dried cherry, subtle spice, and earthy undertones. Fully mature and fragile, this Barbera benefits from careful handling: stand the bottle upright before opening, decant lightly to remove sediment, and serve slightly below room temperature to best appreciate its nuanced aromatics and refined, delicate character.
