1961 Barolo – Marchesi di Barolo

The 1961 vintage is regarded as one of the great years in Piedmont, producing Barolo wines of structure, longevity and classical perfume. Marchesi di Barolo, one of the historic names of the region, played a pivotal role in shaping Barolo’s identity in the 19th century, and this bottle reflects that long-standing tradition of disciplined vineyard management and traditional ageing.

    Tasting Notes:
Now showing a deep brick-garnet hue with amber highlights at the rim, the nose is beautifully mature and expressive. Aromas of dried cherry, rose petal and redcurrant intertwine with notes of leather, tobacco leaf and forest floor. With time in the glass, subtle hints of truffle, cedarwood and warm spice develop, adding complexity. On the palate it is medium-bodied yet structured, with finely resolved tannins and a vibrant thread of acidity that carries the wine gracefully. Flavours of dried red fruit, savoury earth and gentle balsamic tones lead to a long, elegant and contemplative finish.

    Serving & Food Pairing:
Decant carefully to remove sediment and allow the wine to open slowly before serving. Best enjoyed at cellar temperature. An excellent partner to braised meats, truffle-infused dishes, game or mature hard cheeses.

    Summary:
A rare and characterful Barolo from a celebrated vintage and one of the region’s historic estates. The 1961 Marchesi di Barolo offers the classic perfume, structure and savoury complexity that define mature Nebbiolo, making it a compelling bottle for collectors of traditional Piedmont wines.
