Description

1961 Pio Cesare Barolo DOC

Overview:
An extremely rare and historically important Barolo from one of Piedmont’s most respected estates, the 1961 Pio Cesare represents a classic expression of traditional Nebbiolo from the early 1960s. Crafted in a structured, cellar-focused style and designed for very long ageing, it now stands as a fully mature wine that reflects the depth, restraint and longevity of historic Barolo production.

Appearance:
Brick-garnet in colour with tawny-amber evolution at the rim, showing full maturity and long bottle development.

Nose:
Profoundly evolved and tertiary, revealing layers of dried rose petals, sour cherry and dried plum alongside leather, tobacco leaf and forest floor. With aeration, further nuances of truffle, dried herbs, cedarwood and subtle balsamic spice emerge, adding complexity and depth.

Palate:
Delicate, fully resolved and elegant, with tannins completely softened while acidity remains the key structural element. Flavours of dried red fruits, savoury earth and undergrowth evolve across a refined, silky texture, complemented by notes of leather, spice and earthy minerality. Harmonious and contemplative in style.

Finish:
Long, fading and refined, carrying echoes of dried fruit, tobacco, spice and woodland complexity.

Decanting:
Stand upright for 2–3 days to allow sediment to settle. Decant very carefully through a fine strainer with minimal aeration and serve at 16–18°C. Fragile corks are common in wines of this age; strain any fragments during decanting.

About the Producer:
Pio Cesare is one of the oldest and most historic wineries in Piedmont, founded in Alba in the late 19th century. Renowned for its traditional, cellar-aged Barolo and Langhe wines, the estate has long been associated with classic winemaking and long-term bottle maturation, preserving the heritage of the region’s great Nebbiolo-based wines.
