Description

1961 Prunotto Barolo DOC Riserva Cru Bussia

Overview:
A historic and highly significant Barolo from the prestigious Bussia cru in Monforte d’Alba, the 1961 Prunotto Riserva represents one of the earliest expressions of single-vineyard Barolo from the estate. Produced from 100% Nebbiolo using traditional vinification methods with long maceration and extended ageing in large oak casks, it reflects the structured, cellar-driven style that defined classic Barolo in the mid-20th century. The 1961 vintage is especially important, marking the first production of Prunotto’s Bussia Riserva “Vigna Colonnello” concept.

Appearance:
Brick-garnet in colour with deep amber reflections, showing full maturity and long bottle evolution.

Nose:
Highly evolved and complex, revealing layers of dried cherry, rose petals and dried plum alongside leather, tobacco leaf and forest floor. With aeration, further nuances of tar, liquorice, cedarwood and earthy spice emerge, adding depth and classic Nebbiolo tertiary character.

Palate:
Medium-bodied, refined and fully evolved, with tannins now softened and integrated while Nebbiolo’s natural acidity still provides structure and lift. Flavours of dried red fruits, savoury earth and balsamic notes unfold gradually, supported by hints of spice, leather and woodland character. Harmonious and contemplative in style.

Finish:
Long, elegant and fading slowly, carrying notes of dried fruit, earth, tobacco and subtle spice.

Decanting:
Stand upright for 2–3 days to allow sediment to settle. Decant carefully through a fine strainer and allow minimal aeration before serving at 16–18°C. Fragile corks are common; strain any fragments during decanting.

About the Producer:
Prunotto is a historic Piedmontese winery founded in the early 20th century in Alba, renowned for classic Langhe wines and pioneering cru expressions such as Bussia. The estate played an important role in shaping the modern identity of Barolo through traditional, site-driven winemaking.
