Description
1976 Giovanni Scanavino Barolo DOC
Overview:
A beautifully mature expression of traditional Barolo, the 1976 Giovanni Scanavino reflects the classical Piedmontese style of the era — structured, long-lived and deeply complex with age. Now fully evolved, it offers the savoury tertiary depth, aromatic nuance and quiet austerity that define mature Nebbiolo from the Langhe.
Appearance:
Pale garnet with pronounced brick-orange evolution at the rim, showing the graceful maturity characteristic of long-aged traditional Barolo.
Nose:
Highly tertiary and intensely aromatic, opening with dried rose petals, sour cherry and dried plum layered over leather, tobacco leaf and forest floor. With aeration, further complexity emerges through truffle, cedarwood, dried herbs, earthy spice and delicate balsamic nuances.
Palate:
Elegant, savoury and fully resolved, with tannins now completely softened and integrated into a silky, harmonious texture. The fruit has evolved into dried cherry, stewed red berries and earthy savoury tones supported by notes of leather, cedar, liquorice and subtle truffle character. Nebbiolo’s natural acidity continues to provide lift and structure, carrying the wine gracefully through its long tertiary development.
Finish:
Long, refined and gently austere, lingering through dried flowers, tobacco, earthy spice and balsamic nuance.
Decanting:
Stand upright for 2–3 days to allow sediment to settle. Decant carefully through a fine strainer and aerate 1–2 hours before serving at 16–18°C. Fragile corks are common; strain any fragments during decanting.
About the Producer:
Giovanni Scanavino was a traditional Piedmontese producer associated with the classical era of Barolo winemaking, producing wines built for extended ageing and authentic expression of Nebbiolo and the Langhe terroir.
