Description
The 1955 Barolo Riserva from Castellana is an exceptional example of mid-century Piedmontese winemaking, produced in a vintage regarded as one of the greatest of the 1950s. As a Riserva, this wine would have seen extended aging—often well beyond the legal minimum—likely in large Slavonian oak casks, yielding a structured, age-worthy expression of Nebbiolo.
In the glass, expect a pale garnet core with orange and rust-toned edges, reflecting nearly seven decades of evolution. The nose is mature and deeply layered, offering aromas of dried rose petals, old leather, balsamic reduction, tar, and truffle. Subtle hints of dried cherry, cedar, and forest floor enhance the aromatic complexity, shifting gently as the wine opens up.
On the palate, this Barolo is elegant and fully resolved. The tannins, once firm, are now softened and silky, while the acidity—one of Nebbiolo’s strengths—remains bright enough to provide balance and freshness. Flavours of dried red fruit, savory herbs, cigar box, and earth unfold in delicate succession. The finish is long, graceful, and contemplative.
The 1955 vintage in Barolo is celebrated for its balance, structure, and longevity, and this Castellana Riserva would have been crafted for precisely this kind of long-term cellaring. Today, it stands not only as a wine but as a piece of history—best enjoyed slowly, with appreciation for its quiet power and enduring elegance.
