Description
The Massolino Barolo DOCG 2019 Vigna Rionda Riserva is a highly prestigious expression of Nebbiolo from Serralunga d’Alba in Piedmont, Italy. It comes from the legendary Vigna Rionda cru, one of the most important vineyards in the entire Barolo appellation, known for producing wines of exceptional structure, depth, and longevity.
Tasting Notes:
The 2019 vintage is powerful, complex, and very structured, yet already showing remarkable aromatic precision. The nose reveals layers of red cherry, raspberry, rose petals, violet, licorice, tobacco, balsamic notes, and crushed stones. On the palate it is full-bodied with firm but refined tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish. It is still very young and austere, but clearly built for long ageing and future complexity.
Ratings:
98 points – Wine Spectator
97 points – James Suckling
These scores confirm the 2019 Vigna Rionda Riserva as one of the most highly rated recent Barolo releases, with near-universal critical acclaim across major international reviewers.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Best served at 18–20°C and requires long decanting (2–3 hours minimum if opened young). It pairs excellently with rich dishes such as braised beef, game, truffle-based pasta, mushroom risotto, and aged cheeses. It is a wine designed primarily for long cellar ageing, reaching its peak complexity over decades.
Producer:
Massolino is one of the most respected traditional producers in Barolo, founded in 1896. The estate is especially famous for its holdings in Vigna Rionda, one of the most iconic crus in Serralunga d’Alba, producing wines with extraordinary structure, minerality, and ageing potential.
