Description

1998 Le Macchiole “Paleo” Bolgheri DOC

Overview:
A landmark expression from one of Bolgheri’s most visionary estates, the 1998 Le Macchiole “Paleo” captures the richness, structure and elegance of the early Super Tuscan era. Produced before the wine’s later transition to a pure Cabernet Franc expression, this vintage reflects the original Bordeaux-inspired philosophy of the estate, combining Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc into a wine of remarkable depth, balance and ageing potential. Now fully mature, it offers a compelling snapshot of Bolgheri’s formative years.

Appearance:
Deep garnet in colour with subtle brick-red evolution at the rim, showing concentration and graceful maturity developed over more than two decades in bottle.

Nose:
Complex and beautifully evolved, opening with aromas of blackcurrant, plum and dried cherry layered with cedarwood, tobacco leaf and warm spice. With aeration, further nuances of graphite, dried herbs, dark cocoa and balsamic emerge, adding depth and sophistication.

Palate:
Silky yet structured, with finely integrated tannins supporting flavours of cassis, black cherry and dried fig. Notes of espresso, cigar box and sweet spice unfold gradually across the palate, balanced by fresh acidity that preserves vibrancy and lift. The mature tertiary complexity is seamlessly integrated, giving the wine both richness and refinement.

Finish:
Long, elegant and persistent, lingering through dark fruits, herbs, spice and fine oak nuances.

Decanting:
Decant for 1–2 hours before serving at 17–18°C to allow the wine’s layered bouquet and mature complexity to fully emerge.

About the Estate:
Le Macchiole is one of Bolgheri’s pioneering estates, widely respected for its innovative approach and dedication to producing wines of individuality and terroir expression. Founded in the 1980s, the estate quickly gained international recognition for its richly textured yet elegant wines, helping establish Bolgheri as one of Italy’s most prestigious fine wine regions.
