  • Description

The *1998 Le Macchiole “Paleo” Bolgheri DOC* is a landmark expression from one of Tuscany’s most visionary estates. Produced before “Paleo” became a varietal Cabernet Franc in later vintages, the 1998 reflects the original Super Tuscan philosophy—crafted from a Bordeaux-inspired blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc grown in the maritime climate of Bolgheri. The vintage was marked by a warm, dry summer and ideal harvest conditions, resulting in wines of great concentration, balance, and ageing potential. Now, after more than 25 years in bottle, this *Paleo* offers a rare chance to experience its full maturity and elegance.

In the glass, it shows a deep garnet hue with subtle brick reflections at the rim. The nose is captivating, opening with ripe blackcurrant, plum, and dried cherry, layered with notes of cedar, tobacco, leather, and warm spice. As it breathes, more complex nuances emerge—graphite, dried herbs, dark cocoa, and a hint of balsamic—showcasing the wine’s long evolution.

On the palate, the *1998 Paleo* is silky yet structured, with finely integrated tannins and a perfect harmony between fruit richness and savoury depth. Flavours of cassis, black cherry, and fig are intertwined with notes of espresso, cigar box, and sweet spice, all carried by a fresh acidity that keeps the wine vibrant. The finish is long, elegant, and persistent, leaving lingering impressions of dark fruit, herbs, and fine oak.

The *1998 Le Macchiole “Paleo”* is not just a Super Tuscan—it is a piece of Bolgheri history, crafted before the wine’s stylistic shift to a pure Cabernet Franc expression. A superb choice for collectors and connoisseurs, it offers a mature, complex, and deeply satisfying taste of one of Tuscany’s great vintages.
