Description

1986 Bramaterra – Luigi Perazzi (Alto Piemonte, Italy)

A beautifully mature Alto Piemonte red in the classic Bramaterra register (Nebbiolo with touches of Croatina/Vespolina/Uva Rara): perfumed, mineral and savoury. Brick-garnet with a broad tawny rim, it opens on dried cherry and cranberry, rose and violet, with cedar, sweet tobacco and tea leaf, then the tell-tale iron/hematite and blood-orange lift from the region’s porphyry and volcanic sands. Mid-weight and silken on the palate: lively, cool-climate acidity carries red-cherry fruit, dried herbs and subtle underbrush; tannins are fine and fully resolved. The finish is long and tapering with cherry skin, graphite, orange zest and dried flowers.

Producer note: Luigi Perazzi bottled in a traditional Alto Piemonte style—large old casks, moderate alcohol and an emphasis on elegance and mineral drive—well suited to graceful long ageing as shown here.

Serve: 16–18 °C. Stand upright 12–24 hours; very gentle decant for sediment just before pouring.
Food pairing: Roast chicken with herbs, tajarin with butter and sage, mushroom/porcini risotto, aged alpine cheeses.
