  • Description

The 1985 vintage is widely recognised as a classic year in the Douro, with ideal weather conditions throughout the growing season. A warm, dry summer followed by a well-timed harvest produced grapes of excellent ripeness and balance. While many producers declared Vintage Ports, the vintage also yielded remarkable wines for extended cask ageing. This Colheita captures the essence of that year with over three decades of development, offering an elegant alternative to its Vintage counterparts.

    Winemaking
Hand-picked at optimal ripeness, the grapes were destemmed and crushed, then fermented in traditional granite lagares under controlled temperatures (28–30°C). Careful maceration and manual pumping over were used to maximise extraction of colour, flavour, and tannins. Fermentation was halted by the addition of grape brandy at the ideal sweetness (Baumé), resulting in a fortified wine. The wine was then aged in 550-litre oak casks in Burmester’s cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia for over three decades, before bottling as a certified Colheita.

    Tasting Notes
Amber-gold in colour with olive-green tinges at the rim. The nose is richly aromatic, offering layers of dried figs, toasted almonds, orange peel, and subtle hints of vanilla, cedar, and caramelised sugar. On the palate, it is silky and well-structured, revealing deep notes of molasses, walnuts, burnt toffee, and spiced citrus peel. A vibrant acidity underpins the sweetness, providing freshness and elegance through to a long, warming finish.

    Food Pairing
Perfect with caramelised desserts, walnut tart, or aged cheeses of medium intensity. A delightful accompaniment to crème brûlée, panforte, or pecan pie.

    Storage and Serving Advice
Store upright in a cool, dark place away from temperature fluctuations. Best served between 14–16°C. Once opened, the bottle should be kept in the fridge and consumed within 2 to 3 months. Sediment is natural in older colheita ports.
