Description
Cabernet, 1977
Tenuta Sottomonte di Butrio
A fascinating survivor from the late 1970s, this 1977 Cabernet from Tenuta Sottomonte di Butrio offers a rare opportunity to experience mature Italian Cabernet at full tertiary development.
In the glass, the wine shows a soft brick-red core fading to tawny at the rim — a clear sign of graceful ageing. The bouquet is fully evolved and evocative, with aromas of dried cherry, stewed plum and cranberry layered alongside notes of leather, tobacco leaf, cedarwood and autumnal forest floor. There is a gentle savoury edge — hints of dried herbs and sweet spice — that adds complexity and charm.
On the palate, the structure has softened beautifully over time. Tannins are supple and resolved, allowing flavours of redcurrant compote, liquorice and dried strawberry to unfold. The acidity remains sufficient to carry the wine, giving lift and freshness despite its considerable age. The finish is mellow, persistent and quietly elegant rather than powerful.
This is not a wine of youthful fruit or bold extraction — it is a contemplative, fully mature red for those who appreciate nuance and history in the glass.
Serving suggestion:
Stand upright for 24 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Decant gently and serve at 16–18°C. Best enjoyed with roast game, mushroom risotto, or simply on its own in good company.
A rare and characterful bottle from 1977 — ideal for milestone birthdays, anniversaries or collectors of mature Italian wines.
