Description

Produced during the formative years of Margaret River's emergence as one of Australia's premier wine regions, this 1989 Cape Mentelle Shiraz represents a rare opportunity to experience a mature example of one of the estate's enduring wines. Carefully matured over more than three decades, it offers a fascinating expression of Australian Shiraz, combining varietal character with the savoury complexity and refinement that only extended bottle ageing can provide.

Appearance:
Deep garnet in colour with brick-red highlights at the rim, reflecting its maturity while retaining impressive depth and vitality.

Nose:
Complex and beautifully evolved, revealing aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and preserved plum layered with cedar, tobacco leaf and sweet baking spice. Characteristic notes of dried eucalyptus, bay leaf and subtle mint emerge with aeration, adding further complexity and a distinctly Australian character.

Palate:
Elegant and harmonious, with softened tannins and vibrant acidity maintaining freshness and balance. Flavours of dark berries, black cherry and plum are complemented by notes of cedar, tobacco, dried herbs and gentle spice. Fully mature yet remarkably composed, the wine retains a core of fruit beneath its evolved character, showcasing both the longevity of well-made Australian Shiraz and the balance for which Margaret River has become renowned.

Finish:
Long, smooth and persistent, with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice, cedar and savoury herbal nuances.

Decanting:
Stand upright for 24–48 hours prior to opening to allow sediment to settle. Decant carefully through a fine strainer immediately before serving at 16–18°C. Fragile corks are common with wines of this age; any cork fragments should be removed during decanting.

About the Producer:
Cape Mentelle is one of Margaret River's pioneering wineries and played a significant role in establishing the region's international reputation for premium wine production. Founded in 1970, the estate became renowned for producing structured, age-worthy wines that helped define the character and potential of Margaret River during the formative decades of modern Australian fine wine. Today, Cape Mentelle continues to produce Shiraz alongside its acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon, with mature examples such as this offering a valuable insight into the evolution and longevity of the estate's winemaking.
