Description
1989 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse offers a classic, fully mature expression of Pauillac from a warm, characterful vintage. After more than three decades in bottle, it has shed its youthful austerity and now shows a harmonious balance of gently fading fruit, cedarwood complexity and the savoury depth that marks traditional Left Bank claret.
In the glass, it presents a brick-garnet core with a broad, amber-tinged rim. The nose is refined and quietly complex: dried blackcurrant and red cherry mingle with cedar, cigar box and pencil shavings, alongside hints of leather, forest floor and a touch of graphite. With air, subtler notes of dried herbs and warm spice emerge, adding further nuance.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied and gracefully resolved, with fine, powdery tannins and a cool, savoury profile. Flavours of dried cassis, plum, leaf tobacco and earthy spice unfold gently, supported by a still-present but soft acidity that keeps everything in balance. The finish is long, dry and persistent, carried by notes of cedar, tobacco and gently fading fruit.
This is a bottle to enjoy for its authenticity and mature Pauillac character rather than sheer power. Best served at cellar temperature after a careful, brief decant to remove sediment. A lovely opportunity to experience fully evolved Grand-Puy Ducasse from the excellent 1989 vintage—subtle, classic and quietly rewarding.
