Description
The Castel del Monte 1966 Tenuta Rivera is a rare historic red wine from Puglia, Italy. Produced by Tenuta Rivera, it comes from the Castel del Monte DOC area, traditionally based on native grapes such as Nero di Troia (Uva di Troia). It reflects the classic southern Italian style of the 1960s: structured yet rustic, with a focus on local identity and long bottle evolution when well preserved.
Tasting notes:
The 1966 vintage is now fully mature and deeply tertiary. The nose opens with aromas of dried black cherry, plum, fig, leather, tobacco leaf, dried herbs, and earthy forest floor notes. With aeration, additional nuances of balsamic tones, spice, and faint underbrush may appear.
On the palate it is soft, evolved, and gently rustic, with tannins now fully resolved and acidity providing the remaining structure. The fruit has transformed into savory dried-fruit and earthy expressions, with subtle bitter and herbal complexity typical of aged southern Italian reds. The finish is medium in length, warm, and gently fading.
Serving & food pairing:
Best served at 16–18°C, with very gentle handling and minimal or no decanting.
It pairs well with:
Roasted lamb or goat
Braised beef dishes
Game meats
Mushroom-based preparations
Aged pecorino and hard cheeses
Traditional Apulian cuisine
