  • Description

The 1966 Château Fontaine Montaiguillon from Saint-Émilion is a rare and beautifully mature example of Right Bank Bordeaux from one of the great classic vintages of the 20th century. Located in the satellite appellation of Montagne-Saint-Émilion, the estate has long been known for producing Merlot-driven wines with depth, supple texture, and the ability to age gracefully. The 1966 vintage, marked by a long, even growing season, delivered wines of exceptional balance and structure—qualities that have allowed this bottle to remain vibrant and expressive after nearly six decades.

In the glass, the wine reveals a delicate brick-red core fading to a tawny rim, reflecting its extended maturity. The bouquet is captivating and deeply evolved, with aromas of dried redcurrant, plum, and black cherry interwoven with cigar box, leather, and old cedar. Subtle notes of truffle, earthy spice, and dried herbs emerge with air, creating a layered and evocative aromatic profile that speaks of both the terroir and its long time in bottle.

On the palate, this 1966 Saint-Émilion is elegant and silky, with tannins that have softened into a velvety frame. The fruit has mellowed into flavours of dried cherry, fig, and a hint of orange peel, supported by savoury undertones of forest floor, tobacco leaf, and gentle spice. A fine thread of acidity still runs through the wine, giving it a lift and keeping the finish fresh despite its age. The length is impressive, leaving a warm, graceful echo of fruit and earth.

This is a wine to savour slowly and with care, ideally decanted lightly to remove sediment without overexposing it to air. Perfect for pairing with refined dishes such as roast lamb, duck breast, or a simple mushroom and herb risotto, it also shines alongside aged cheeses like Comté or Saint-Nectaire. The 1966 Château Fontaine Montaiguillon is more than just a bottle of wine—it is a living piece of Bordeaux history, offering a rare opportunity to experience the elegance and longevity of a truly great vintage.
